IELTS General Training – Writing Task 2

The format of IELTS General Training, Task 2 is essay writing. This task’s question consists of instructions about an argument, a point of view, or a problem. You will be asked to write an essay discussing those given points from the instructions by providing factual information, presenting a solution, or justifying your opinion. Topics are of general interests such as societal issues, environmental problems, educational policies and so on. 

Example of Writing Task 2 instruction

Example 1:

Nowadays, pollution and waste levels are increasing rapidly. How does this affect ordinary people? What steps can be taken to overcome this problem?

Example 2:

The age at which people have children has risen. Some people believe that because of this, families and countries will suffer some problems. What is your opinion?

Time and word limit of Writing Task 2

The minimum word count for Writing Task is 250 words. The weightage of Task 2 is higher than Task 1. You should write this essay relevant to the given topic with supporting facts and arguments and provide a solution. You can share your own experiences while explaining your opinion in this essay. You will be penalized if you write less than 250 words and you cannot spend more than 40 mins for this part. Hence, it would help if you organized your time for both Task 1 and Task 2 as 20 mins and 40 mins. 

Marking and assessment of Writing Task 2

The assessment of Task 2 is similar to Task 1. You can achieve a good score if you meet the below criteria for this essay.

  • Task response
  • Coherence and cohesion
  • Lexical resource
  • Grammatical range and accuracy
