This program is designed in such a way that it makes the students familiar with all the areas of hospitality. It also helps with basic business practices, human resources and leadership that make the students so confident that they can coordinate events at a big level. Marketing skills are also taught to the students. Hospitality and marketing always go hand in hand. People in the hospitality sector can also do verbal marketing like offering room upgrades etc.

This two-year program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in tourism focusing primarily on resorts, hotels and restaurants but including all areas of hospitality.

Program Detail:

Students are taught about the tourism industry, how it originated and how hospitality is related to it. Students are trained in the skills of the industry such as how to meet and greet the guests, serve food and beverage to the customers, coordinate events, and how to supervise and manage areas designated to them. Strong emphasis is laid on communications and human relations as in the service industry or hospitality, communication is the key. 

Students are also given practical training as well so that they can develop the abilities and skills to be a part of the hospitality industry, analyze situations and respond accordingly. With experience, they can also learn how to make effective decisions.

What to expect?

The course is divided into 5 semesters which the students can easily complete in two years. Some of the subjects covered in the first year are Housekeeping, Accommodation Management, Kitchen Management/Food Preparation, Hospitality Computer Applications, Food, and beverage cost controls. 

On the other hand, second-year subjects include Convention Sales and Catering services, Tourism and Canadian Economy, Human Resource Management, Dining Room and Event Management, Hospitality law, Management Communications and Budgeting & Entrepreneurial Training. Marketing and Accounting are also taught in the fourth semester.

Future Career Options

Once graduated, students of this program will be able to work for various hospitality related positions such as:

  • Resort and hotel supervisory positions (that include areas like customer service, human resources, marketing, etc.)
  • Food and beverage supervisors in hotels and restaurants
  • Tour sales and planning
  • Tourism positions in various organizations 
  • Event planning and management

What are the Admission Requirements? 

The requirements to get yourself enrolled in this course are as follows:

  • Student must be graduated from a BC Senior Secondary School or equivalent, or
  • At the time of application, age must be 19 years of age or older
  • In case the student is under 19 years of age, should be able to provide a recommendation from their Secondary School Principal

Resort & Hotel Management Academic Requirements:

English 12 at any level however must have scored a minimum of 67%. For international applicants, the score of IELTS must be 6.5 overall band score (with no band less than 6.0), or equivalent to other internationally recognized English Language Proficiency Tests.

For all those international students, who scored 6.0 in IELTS overall score (with no band less than 5.5), then there are some other requirements which they will need to fulfill.

For students who scored 6 in IELTS

Applicants who have scored less in IELTS may still gain admission to the program with a condition that they will complete ENGL 66 Essential English course in the first year of their program. Students must complete this course to advance beyond 30 program credits.

ENGL 66: Essential English is for students who want to improve their English language skills. Students practice reading, writing, speaking and communicating. These skills help the students to communicate better, improve their performance in college, and help them accomplish the tasks required by their occupation and other aspects of daily life.

Work Term in the third semester

A full-time paid work experience is given to the students so that they get hands-on training so that they can apply their skills and knowledge while being employed with qualified hospitality and tourism employers.
