Celebrating 50 Years: A Look Back at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV)

The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is preparing to commemorate its 50th anniversary on April 4, 2024. Let’s reminisce and delve into UFV’s extraordinary voyage through the years!

About UFV

Where is UFV located?

  • Abbotsford, British Columbia.
    • It’s a fantastic place to study due to its many study programs, job prospects, and fun activities outside of classes. 
    • The Fraser Valley enjoys warm temperatures throughout the year and typically experiences fewer than 14 days of snow annually.


UFV boasts more than 70 programs, catering to various academic interests, including:

  • Master’s degrees
  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degrees
  • College certificates and diplomas
  • Co-operative education opportunities
  • English-language upgrading

History of UFV

UFV was established on April 4, 1974, initially known as Fraser Valley College. It underwent a transformation, evolving into the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV), before ultimately achieving its esteemed status as the university it is recognized as today.

  • 1975: Over 2300 students attending FVC in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission, Hope and Agassiz
  • 1991: Fraser Valley College gains university-college status and becomes University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV)
  • 2004: UCFV awarded Federal Tier 1 Canadian Research Chair in Aboriginal Studies
  • 2006: Over 11,000 students attending UCFV
  • 2007: First master’s degrees awarded
  • 2008: UCFV becomes the University of the Fraser Valley and installs its first Chancellor
  • 2011:
    • UFV has grown to serve approximately 15,000 students, including 800 international students
    • UFV’s economic impact on Fraser Valley grows to at least half a billion
  • 2013: UFV Cascades women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s golf win national championships
  • 2014: UFV celebrates its 40th anniversary on April 4
  • 2015: UFV is named one of BC’s Top Employers
  • 2016: UFV alumni grow to 35,000.

UFV 50 Program Fund

To launch its 50th anniversary year with flair, UFV is unveiling the UFV 50 Program Fund. This endeavor seeks to honor UFV’s remarkable history and foster participation from the broader UFV community. Commencing on April 4, 2024, with a commemorative event marking 50 years since its establishment, the festivities will extend throughout the year and into April 2025, culminating in a community celebration and alumni reunion weekend. The UFV 50 Program Fund will offer grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to support a variety of anniversary initiatives. Departments, units, and recognized student organizations are encouraged to submit funding proposals for programs or projects within the 50th anniversary timeframe.
